Nemo Commercially Coded
Being professional is an important part of any business, and so we are delighted to share that sailing yacht Nemo is commercially coded to sail 60 miles from a safe haven (Category 2) with the British Virgin Islands Shipping Registry
What does this mean?
Being commercially coded means that Nemo was and will be annually inspected so we can have guests on board and operate crewed yacht charters. Every country operates a similar system for vessels registered within them.
Nemo is registered in the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry. They follow codes aligned to the UK shipping Registry. This enables Nemo to fly a Red Ensign (the Red Flag with the Union Jack in the corner).
The inspections take place against codes published by the United Kingdom MCA (Maritime and Coast Guard Agency). The MCA is considered a global leader in ensuring sailing yacht safety.
The commercial coding inspection includes the structure of the vessel, machinery and safety equipment on board, documentation, manning and training of the crew. They even ensure food safety standards on board!
Hence a vessel which has met the requirements of the codes is referred to as ‘coded’. Nemo is now coded to have six guests on board while sailing up to a distance of 60 miles from a safe haven. Perfect for a crewed cabin charter in the beautiful Caribbean.
Some of the details
Nemo has been independently inspected in and out of the water. Also, we have had the stability of the vessel assessed.

Nemo was lifted out of the water to ensure the hull is sound. And when she was out of the water, the inspector ensured that all required equipment is in onboard, it functions correctly and is in date.
The list of the required equipment is extensive and includes life rafts, fire extinguishers, life jackets and flares. It even requires two buckets labelled ‘FIRE’ with a lanyard permanently spliced to the handle!
In all areas, Nemo exceeded the commercial requirements of the code. We have additional space in our life rafts, extra life vests and more safety equipment. This includes a GPS tracking system and an emergency location beacon (EPRIB).
The registry also inspects the documentation required to run and maintain Nemo. Training records, operating procedures, and correct and in date charts for the area of operation.
We have always been confident that Nemo is a safe vessel. We now have the official backing to support us, and we will be re-inspected annually to ensure she remains so.
What does this mean for our guests?
As a guest on Nemo, you can relax and enjoy a wonderful crewed cabin charter, knowing that Nemo is a safe sailing yacht.
You will also have an incredibly comfortable stay, delicious food, fabulous sailing and instruction. And you will have the wonderful equipment to use while at anchor – what we lovingly refer to as our water toys (kayak, paddleboard, and a hammock to name a few).
We are incredibly proud of this achievement. We have started off as we mean to carry on. Delivering high standards and exceeding expectations.
