Tortola
Tortola is the largest of the islands. It features many white-sand beaches, including Cane Garden Bay and Smuggler’s Cove. Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, has a harbour dotted with sailing boats and is known as a yachting hub. In the island’s southwest, forested Sage Mountain National Park offers trails and sweeping views over neighbouring cays.
Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda, home to The Baths beach area, boasts steep vegetation-covered slopes that tumble down from Gorda Peak to deserted white beaches far below. Discerning travellers are drawn to Virgin Gorda for its quiet coves and beautiful anchorages.
Jost Van Dyke
Jost Van Dyke is named after an early Dutch settler reputed to have been a pirate. Sunbathe at the unspoilt beaches of White Bay, the home of the delicious Painkiller rum cocktail. Or sail across to Little Jost and Sandy Cay where you can imagine yourself a castaway for the day. The natural bubbling pool Jacuzzi formed by the foaming seas at the east end of the island is a great place to relax.
Smaller Islands
The sixty or so islands, islets and cays that comprise the BVI cover nearly sixty square miles and because they are so close to each other, together with the natural trade wind conditions, they provide ideal sailing conditions year-round. Many of the smaller islands bear a name that reflects their colourful past and unique landscape, such as Buck Island, Dead Chest Island, Fallen Jerusalem, Ginger Island, Great Camanoe, Round Rock and Scrub Island. Among these numerous smaller islands, you’ll find must-see destinations for snorkelling such as Wreck of the Rhone and the Indians, and water sports, day hikes that lead the way to extraordinary lookouts, wildlife sanctuaries and so much more – all ensconced in the boater’s paradise that is the British Virgin Islands.
